India’s commitment to addressing climate change and advancing its energy transition agenda has never been more pronounced. As the country embarks on an ambitious journey to achieve its climate goals, the need for substantial capital investment is paramount. To this end, a high-profile delegation from India, consisting of nearly 30 industry leaders and government representatives, will gather in London, UK, from 25-27 September 2024 for a series of strategic dialogues with over 200 global investors. This event, organised under the banner of the Climate and Energy Transition Finance Initiative (CETFI) and in partnership with the London Stock Exchange and others, aims to bridge the gap between India’s climate ambitions and the global capital markets.

India’s Climate and Energy Transition Agenda

India has set ambitious targets in its fight against climate change, positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy and sustainable development. The country’s roadmap includes:

- 500GW of Renewable Energy: By 2030, India aims to install 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity. This goal is part of a broader effort to reduce the carbon intensity of its economy and meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

- 5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMT pa) of Green Hydrogen Production: India is also setting its sights on becoming a key player in the global green hydrogen market, with a production target of 5 MMT pa. Green hydrogen is seen as a critical component in decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement, and heavy transportation.

- 20% Blending Target for Biofuels: The country is pushing for a 20% blending target for biofuels, part of its strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.

In addition to these targets, India is implementing significant programmes in biogas production, electric mobility, sustainable agriculture, forestry, waste management, air pollution control, river rejuvenation, and water resource management. Collectively, these initiatives represent a monumental demand for capital, with estimates indicating that India will require over USD 2 trillion in climate finance by 2030.

The Role of Global Investors and Strategic Partnerships

The scale of India’s climate finance needs is unprecedented, and meeting these demands will require innovative financing structures and instruments. However, more importantly, it will necessitate the establishment of significant partnerships with the global financing community. This is where the Global Investor Dialogue in London plays a crucial role.

The dialogue aims to bring together key stakeholders from India and the global investment community to explore new avenues for collaboration. With the participation of more than 200 global investors, the event provides a platform for Indian industry leaders and government officials to present a range of projects and initiatives that require international funding. These projects span multiple sectors, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, biofuels, and sustainable infrastructure.

CETFI’s Role in Facilitating Climate Finance

The Climate and Energy Transition Finance Initiative (CETFI) has been instrumental in creating an ecosystem that supports the flow of climate finance into India and other emerging markets. Launched in 2023 during India’s G20 presidency, CETFI is a multi-stakeholder alliance dedicated to accelerating climate finance by fostering partnerships between emerging markets and the global financial community.

CETFI’s collaboration with the London Stock Exchange for this Global Investor Dialogue is a testament to its commitment to bridging the finance gap. By facilitating discussions between Indian stakeholders and global investors, CETFI aims to unlock the capital needed to achieve India’s ambitious climate targets.
